Photoshop Filter Permanent Press by Mister Retro
on August 19, 2008 at 9:00 amThe newly released Photoshop filter Permanent Press by Mister Retro is perhaps one of the most exciting plug-ins to me. First of all, I like vintage prints especially solid ink coasters with a nice looking design. Secondly, I’ve always wondered what my comic strip would look like if it were printed on newspaper. With this plug-in, I can create different vintage look for my comic strips.
One warning though: if your original comic strip is prepared in very low-resolution (the typical 72 dpi), any of the many filters you apply to your strip will turn it into a non-desirable mess. I create my comic strip in Illustrator, and I can export my strip at 300 dpi, a size big enough to really let the plug-in shine.
The second warning: Unless you want a CMYK dotted print look, all the filters in that plug-in will convert your graphic to spot colors of up to a maximum of 10 colors. In the beginning I was very disappointed, but now I think about it, one of the charms of vintage prints is spot colors.
Let’s take a look at some of the results!
I think “Letter Press” and “Printed in Taiwan” look really real.
Gosh,..I’d love to get these plugins…just too much $$$ for a plugin I’m afraid.

Thanks for sharing the same frame used with these filters. I’d seen them earlier and thought they looked very interesting. I don’t make comic strips, but I think I could probably use these for some other things, too… maybe even a newspaper-theme for a blog template.
